Postage tax has long been around in a couple of forms, such as hand-stamping the letter itself and not the envelope, with stamps creating a uniform method of paying for postage.
The very first UK stamp was the Penny Black, which was made available 1st May 1840, which was followed a week later by the Penny Blue. Both stamps possessed an image the Queen Victoria. This now meant that the duty was paid by the sender and not the recipient. Stamps originally possessed images of monarchs and politicians, but now varies to cover everything from television programmes to company logos.
A stamp collector is known as a philatelist.
