The Allied invasion of Nazi occupied NW France was the largest amphibious assault of all time. Planned for one year in advance, it involved 2m troops from 12 countries. On D-Day the 6 of June some 12,000 aircraft were involved, and in the early hours 24,000 paratroopers and troops in gliders landed behind lines to take out artillery and secure bridges. D-Day is known for the Beach landings across 5 zones by UK, US and Canadian troops. On that first day 132,000 allied troops landed – at an estimated cost of 4400 were killed; and 10,000 injured. D-Day was the start of Operation Overlord, to take back Europe, and by the end of June 875k troops had crossed the channel.
