Description:
The Mother and Child composition is one of the earliest types of Christian image to be depicted, with examples being found in the catacombs in Rome where early Christians buried their dead. Royal Mail has selected a number of these compositions from around the world to appear as a set of Special Stamps, focusing on those originating from the 13th century that adopted a more intimate depiction of the Mother and Child, which became very popular in the later Middle Ages. These images showed Christ and his mother in close physical contact, turning towards each other, making eye contact, or with Christ in a naturalistic pose asleep in his mother’s arms.
